Hugh James Solicitors represents a large number of families affected by the E-coli 0157 outbreak in South Wales.

The first cases were identified on 16 September 2005 and within a week there were 150 cases identified in the South Wales valleys with 42 schools affected.

Following the death of 5 years old Mason Jones on 4 October 2005 a police investigation was launched and by 14 November 2005, 168 cases compatible with E-coli infection had been identified.

On 5 October the National Assembly for Wales established a committee to consider a Public Inquiry under the Inquiries Acts 2005 and to report to the National Assembly by 7 December 2005 on its conclusions.

On 7 December 2005 the National Assembly for Wales passed a motion, causing an Inquiry to be held under Section 1 of the Inquiries Act 2005 with the following terms of reference.

"(a) To inquire into the circumstances that led to the outbreak of the E-coli 0157 infection in South Wales of September 2005 into the handling of the outbreak, and (b) to consider the implications for the future and make recommendations accordingly."

Professor Hugh Pennington was appointed as head of the Inquiry and he is a world-renowned expert in E-coli 0157 and has carried out previous Inquiries into an outbreak in Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Partner, Stephen Webber, has been appointed as the legal representative of the affected families to the Public Inquiry and if you have been affected by the Inquiry then you should contact Mr Webber to register with us to be represented in the Public Inquiry.

Hugh James Solicitors has also been instructed by the families to investigate potential civil claims for compensation for the personal injuries suffered by all persons infected by E-coli 0157 by whoever is held responsible for the outbreak following all investigations.
